Army officer killed in cross-border firing

A junior commissioned officer (JCO) of Army was killed on Tuesday in cross-LoC firing by Pakistani troops in Kupwara district of Kashmir. According to an Army <g data-gr-id="16">spokesperson</g> Pakistan troops resorted to firing on forward positions in the sector around 1 pm, violating the ceasefire once again.

The JCO was hit by a Pakistani sniper near the LoC in Nowgam sector and later succumbed to injuries, an army spokesman said in Srinagar.

Army has already averted several infiltration bids made from the PoK in North Kashmir especially – <g data-gr-id="17">Keran</g>, Tanghdar and Nowgam sectors this year. After the <g data-gr-id="12">incident</g> the troops guarding the Line of Control have been asked to remain extra vigilant while moving around the areas close to LoC.

The failure of New Delhi and Islamabad to resume talks has heightened tension across the LoC and the international border across the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Several ceasefire violations have been reported during the month including terror attack on BSF convoy in Udhampur and in Gurdaspur in neighbouring Punjab.
