Army foils infiltration bid in Keran sector, soldier killed

An army soldier was killed in the Keran sector of the Line of Control in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district where another infiltration bid was foiled Thursday night.

A defence spokesman said here that alert army troops spotted a group of heavily armed infiltrators trying to sneak into the Indian side in Kachal area of the Keran sector on Thursday night.

‘The troops challenged the infiltrators, whereupon they started firing, triggering a shootout. One of our boys was injured and later died. However, the infiltration bid was foiled,’ the spokesman said.
The Kachal area is 15 km away from Shalabato where the army carried out a 14-day long operation against a group of about 30 infiltrators.

Meanwhile, Pakistani troops on Friday shelled mortars and fired on forward areas along the LoC in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistani troops opened small arms firing and shelled 82 mm mortars in forward areas along LoC in Barasingha, Mendhar and Hamirpur sub-sectors of Poonch district from 8:30 hours, a defence spokesman said .
