Anti-Sikh riots: Court asks CBI officer to appear on February 22

A city court on Tuesday directed a senior CBI official to appear before it after the probe agency failed to file a status report in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against Congress leader Jagdish Tytler.

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Saurabh Pratap Singh Laler ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Superintendent of Police, monitoring the case, to appear before it on February 22 to apprise him about the status of investigation into the case.

The court order came after the CBI failed to file a status report in the case.

The court had on December 4, 2015, ordered the CBI to further investigate a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case against Tytler, pointing to arms dealer Abhishek Verma's statement that Tytler had tried to influence a witness of the riots, saying that it should be found out whether Verma's statement was true or not and other aspects of the case.

Verma told the CBI that Tytler had tried to influence one of the witnesses by giving him a hefty sum of money and promising to settle his son abroad. Earlier, the agency gave a clean chit to the Congress leader twice.

In April 2013, a sessions court rejected a closure report and ordered the agency to further investigate the killings.
