Anti-Sikh riot protester Nirpreet Kaur breaks fast at Jantar Mantar

Nirpreet Kaur, one of the key witnesses and victim of the 1984 anti-Sikh riots, broke her six-day fast on Wednesday, after Punjab chief minister Prakash Singh Badal assured support for her fight for justice.

Nirpreet had been fasting at the Jantar Mantar in central Delhi, demanding justice for about 3,000 Sikhs killed in the 1984 violence following the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi. Nirpreet had lost her family members in the Delhi Cantonment area during the massacre in November 1984.

Badal visited Jantar Mantar and assured Nirpreet of the Shiromani Akali Dal's support. Kaur broke the fast following the Punjab chief minister offering a glass of juice to her.

'This is not only my fight. All the parties should come together to demand justice for us,’ she said after breaking Nirpreet fast.

About 1,000 people were present at Jantar Mantar when Nirpreet broke her fast.

She was later taken to the Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital for medical consultation.

A doctor attending to her said that her condition had been deteriorating every day.

On 30 April, district and sessions judge JR  Aryan acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar while convicting five others in the case.
