Poll time rhetoric can get unsavory. On Monday, however, Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, often touted as the Big Hope for India, took it to a new low as he targeted PM Manmohan Singh on his cabinet reshuffle and said those tainted and involved in corruption were promoted. But what was in downright bad taste was a particular comment about one minister in the new cabinet who Modi said had a ‘Rs50 crore girlfriend’. It was obvious from his speech that Modi was taking a dig at MoS HRD Shashi Tharoor.
Though he did not take Tharoor’s name, it was evident that he was referring to Tharoor’s expulsion from the cabinet in 2009 due to the IPL controversy involving his wife Sunanda Pushkar, then his fiancee. Modi said: ‘He (Tharoor) claimed in Parliament that he is in no way connected to Rs 50 crore and that these are in his friend’s name. Who has heard of a crorepati girlfriend? And then girlfriend becomes wife, we learn some time later.’
Criticising Manmohan Singh over price rise and inflation, Modi referred to him as ‘Maun (Silent) Mohan Singh’. He said: Aaj ki aakhbaron ki headline hai Maun Mohan Singh ne Himachal main apna Maun tod diya (Today’s headline is Maun Mohan Singh broke his silence in Himachal). He was referring to the prime minister’s speech on Sunday in which he said the BJP government neglected development in the state.
Have they (the Congress)shown any sympathy about the problems faced by the common man. Have they said anything about price hike? Modi asked the crowd.
