Another cop falls to criminals’ bullet

Vijay Vihar is close to Rohini township. This is third such incident in month of October in which a police official has been shot down by the criminals while on duty.

According to police, Constable Jagveer Singh (42) and Constable Narendra (42) of Vijay Vihar police station were patrolling the area when they noticed a group of youngmen in a moving auto-rickshaw on Lane 7 of Vijay Vihar L-block near the police station around 2.30 AM. They stopped the auto-rickshaw and started questioning the five men (including the one driving the vehicle), after which, the officials became suspicious and asked them to come to the police station.

The officials parked their motorbike there and were about to sit in the auto-rickshaw to direct them towards the police station when, suddenly, one of the men pulled out a gun and shot Jagveer on his chest. ‘The officials did not even get time to react. When Jagveer was shot, Narendra started running towards the police station to seek help. The group fired another bullet and Narendra was shot on his back,’ said Vikramjit Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (outer).

The five of them then also stole Jagveer’s service revolver and fled the scene. All of them were aged between 20 years and 25 years and none of them have been identified yet, said police. Soon after that, police reached the spot and rushed both constables to the Baba Saheb Ambedkar Hospital in Rohini, where Jagveer was declared drought dead and Narendra was admitted in a critical condition. Later, Jagveer’s body was sent for a post mortem examination and Narendra had to be shifted to Jaipur Golden Hospital, said a police official.

Since there was nobody else on that road at the time of the incident, the auto-rickshaw’s registration number could not be noted. CCTV footages obtained from the scene are also not very clear. ‘Police shall start preparing sketches of the assailants based on descriptions given by constable Narendra as soon as his condition is declared stable,’ added DCP Vikramjit Singh.

Jagveer Singh had served in the Army for 15 years before he joined Delhi Police in 2008. He was awarded the prize for the best beat constable in Delhi twice – once in 2012 and again earlier this year.
