Another casualty in letter goof-up

Three days after the letter goof-up, Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday removed principal secretary (Home) RM Srivastava from the post and replaced him by Anil Kumar Gupta.

According to official sources, Srivastava has not been given any post yet.

The removal of Srivastava comes in the wake of the issuance of a controversial letter last week by the home department which erroneously stated agenda of a meeting about reconstruction of Ayodhya temple on the lines of Somnath temple of Gujarat.

Faced with much embarrassment on the issue, the state government has already suspended two officials, including a senior IAS officer.

A letter sent to many senior state officials was issued for 14 October meeting on reconstruction of Ayodhya temple on the lines of Somnath temple. Principal secretary(home) RM Srivastava had hurriedly called a press conference on 12 October to apologise for the goof-up stating that no such meeting was planned.

The letter issued on 9 October and signed by Sarvesh Chandra Mishra, secretary, department of home, was sent to eight officials, including director general of police,  additional director general (Law and Order),   ADG (Intelligence),  IG (Law and Order), I-G (Railways),  DIG, Faizabad zone and DM/SSP Faizabad.

The subject of the letter says:  ‘On the lines of reconstruction of Somnath temple proposal to Government of India to pass a law for construction of Ram temple at Ayodhya.’

The letter further says:  ‘To discuss this issue principal secretary (Home) has called a meeting on 14 October at 6 pm at Lal Bahadur Shastri Command Office. I have been asked to tell you people to attend the meeting on the prescribed date.’

The state government, in a follow up action, suspended a section officer concerned and transferred Sarvesh Chandra Mishra.

Anil Kumar Gupta, once considered very close to political leadership, was posted as member, Revenue Board.
