Anna meets Kejriwal, urges him to break fast

Even as the indefinite fast of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Arvind Kejriwal against ‘inflated’ power bills entered its seventh day on Friday, anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare met him late in the evening and urged him to break his fast.

Kejriwal is fasting at Sundar Nagari in the eastern part of the city. On Friday, to keep up his morale, few eminent personalities had pledged their letter of support. Justice Krishna Iyer, Admiral L Ramdas (former chief of Naval Staff), Admiral RH Tahiliani (another former chief of Naval Staff), JM Lyngdoh (former CEC), Dr PM Bhargava (former Vice Chair of National Knowledge Commission), Dr AK Gopalakrishnan (former Chairman, AERB), EAS Sarma (former Power Secy, Govt Of India), Dr Binayak Sen, SP Udayakumar (leader, Peoples Movement against Nuclear Energy) and few other personalities supported Kejriwal’s fast, urging Delhi government to take note of irregularities highlighted by Kejriwal and take urgent corrective action.

AAP released a joint letter by them which said, ‘The citizens of Delhi, most of who struggle to make two ends meet and simply cannot afford the hiked bills, seek to exercise their right to disobey. They seek to do so in a non-violent manner and are willing to face the consequences including penalties and punitive action. In these circumstances, we extend our support to this call for civil disobedience.’

AAP claimed 1,00,396 more people pledged not to pay the inflated bills on Thursday, taking the total to 3,75,040. The party said around 3,000 volunteers would turn their homes into mini asahyog kendras (non-cooperation centre), in addition to 264 asahyog kendras that already exist.

On Kejriwal’s health, the party said he is stable. ‘His blood pressure is 108/66, pulse 67, sugar 123 and weight is 59 kg. The level of ketones has come down as well from 3+ to 2+,’ said the party.

There is no clarity on how long Kejriwal would sit on the fast, considering the fact that he has been saying he is not demanding anything from the government and his fast and ‘civil disobedience movement’ is aimed at uniting the common man to protest against the ‘inflated’ bills.
