Leading contemporary artist Anjolie Ela Menon will open a new chapter in public art 19 April when she unveils her new mural - Walled City - at Terminal 3 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) for visitors to the capital to glimpse a slice of Mughal history.
The mural will be unveiled by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. Walled City, described by critics as one of Menon's most ambitious works is a 21 feet by 8.2 feet mural of a city street of old Delhi or the old quarters.
‘This street in a walled city is a microcosm of the Indian street. It is unique to our urban culture that the street is the arena for life itself. This is where people live, work, travel, ply their trades, interact, romance, play, celebrate and protest,’ Menon said. ‘Here human beings and animals co-exist in surprising harmony where tradition and modernity blend seamlessly in a scenario of sound and colour, creating endless street theatre,’ Menon added. The renowned artist, who has been working for the last 55 years, is one of the foremost muralists in India.
