Andhra launches scheme for visually challenged children

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy on Friday launched ‘Chinnari Choopu’, a scheme under which school-going children suffering from defect in vision will be given spectacles after necessary tests.

Of the 80 lakh students in the state who underwent eye-test between 29 Oct and 2 Dec, about 4.7 lakh were found to have defect in vision.

The Rajiv Vidya Mission (RVM), in concert with the state Health Department, undertook the programme.

Of the 4.7 lakh students, about 6,000 would require eye surgery, according to the chief minister.

Apart from eye check-up, other medical tests would also be conducted on students, he added.

Further screening of the 4.7 lakh students will be done up to the mandal (tehsil) level till January 31 and they will be distributed spectacles as per their choice, RVM Director V Usharani said.

The Chief Minister distributed spectacles to 200 odd students to mark the inauguration of the programme on Friday.
