Ananthamurthy dies in Bangalore

Jnanpith award winning litterateur UR Ananthamurthy passed away in a Bangalore hospital on Friday. He was 81. He was critically ill till Friday afternoon. The 81-year-old titan of Kannada literature who was admitted to Manipal Hospital, Bangalore, was suffering from multi-organ failure. Ananthamurthy was suffering from renal failure and was under dialysis for some years. He developed cardiac and respiratory complications and was admitted to hospital about 10 days ago.

His wife Esther Ananthamurthy, and daughter Anuradha Ananthamurthy, son in law Vivek Shanbhag were seen at the hospital. He was shifted to ICU four days ago. Born on 21 December, 1932 in Melige, a tiny hamlet near Thirthahalli taluk of Shimoga district, Udupi, Rajgopalacharya Ananthamurthy was the sixth of the eight Jnanpith awardees from Karnataka. He was presented with the award in 1994, in recognition of the body of his work.
