The reported remarks of Aligarh Muslim University’s (AMU) vice chancellor Lt Gen (Rtd) Zameer Uddin Shah on not allowing girls into the main Maulana Azad Library in the campus has evoked sharp reactions from political parties as well as activists. Union human resource development minister Smriti Irani has dubbed the incident as an ‘insult to daughters’ seeking an explanation from the AMU V-C. Shah, a Congress appointee, stirred the hornet’s nest by turning down the demand of students of Women’s College, AMU, for access to the varsity’s Maulana Azad Library.
On the sidelines of an event to mark Maulana Azad’s 126th birth anniversary as ‘Shiksha Diwas,’ Irani said, ‘The ministry’s secretary for higher education has been directed to seek an explanation from AMU V-C in the matter and she will react only after receiving the report.’ Meanwhile the AMU V-C said, ‘These reports are completely wrong. I said there is no space even for a single seat in that library. We are not sexist and we also want women empowerment and certainly don’t want to segregate our girls.’
