Amid ruckus in assembly, CM recounts govt achievements

Amid huge pandemonium and high drama in the Delhi assembly, chief minister Sheila Dikshit claimed that her government has been rapidly expanding the infrastructure of the city and has been able to improve civic amenities for the
fast-growing population of the city.
As she began listing her government’s achievements, Leader of Opposition VK Malhotra interrupted her and asked speaker Yoganand Shastri under what rule was she allowed by Speaker Yoganad Shastri to make a suo motu statement to brief about her government’s performance in the last five years.
‘This government has been most corrupt and inefficient in Delhi’s history. People are struggling with back breaking prices of essential commodities and Dikshit said we have done everything possible for all sections. The government has totally failed to even provide drinking water to the people,’ Malhotra said.
When Dikshit continued her speech despite disruptions, all BJP legislators rose on their feet and accused her of ‘total failure’ which was vociferously rejected by the Congress MLAs who blamed lack of work culture in BJP-ruled municipal corporations for the city’s woes.
‘We have been returned to power consecutively for three times. Is it not enough to testify the kind of public support being enjoyed by our party and the government?’ asked Dikshit.
Exuding confidence, she claimed that the results of the next assembly elections are not going to be any different. ‘We would remain on the treasury benches whereas the BJP would occupy the Opposition benches,’ she said.

Talking about the safety of women in Delhi, Dikshit said, ‘Our government took swift action to set up a women in distress helpline. It has received more than 2 lakh calls. The Opposition used to term Delhi as the rape capital at that time, why they are silent on such incidents frequently taking place in Madhya Pradesh.’
She claimed that the Congress ensured that 143 Bills were passed despite not receiving any cooperation from the Opposition.

‘The government has succeeded in bringing outstanding improvement in power sector. It is now time to bring improvement in water distribution system. The infrastructure developed during Commonwealth Games has enhanced the look and image of the city,’ she claimed.’

On the fast-growing infrastructure of Delhi, she said, ‘Delhi’s per capita income is more than Rs 2 lakh, the highest in the country. Delhi spends 65 per cent of its budget on social sector. The expansion of Delhi Metro under Phase-III will connect every nook and corner of the city. We can boast of having the largest CNG-fleet driven in the world.’
