Ambedkar Nagar seat set for triangular fight

This constituency has been in the hold of octogenarian Congress leader Chaudhary Prem Singh right since 1957 when Singh won the Delhi Metropolitan Council election.

In the last 56 years, Singh, who is referred as the Bhishma Pitama of Delhi politics, has not lost a single assembly election from the seat.

Before winning the 2008 assembly election, Singh had served as Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC) chairperson twice and was also the speaker of Delhi assembly.

But this time a triangular fight for the seat is imminent. BJP has fielded its sitting councillor from the Ambedkar Nagar ward Khushi Ram against Singh,  while Bahujan Samaj Party and Aam Aadmi Party have fielded Ghanshyam Das and Ashok Chauhan, respectively.

Ram has already defeated the Singh’s son Pramod Chaudhary by over 3,000 votes in the last South Delhi Municipal Corporation election. Ram is, however, now challenging the father in the electoral battle field.

Problems: Despite being the MLA from this area for over five decades, Prem Singh has reportedly failed to get basic facilities like water, sewerage system, and health facilities for the residents. Villagers are also troubled because of the high power tariff.

Delhi Congress lost from all four wards in the last municipal elections held in 2012.  Ambedkar Nagar, Khanpur and Pushp Vihar wards went to the BJP, while Madangir was won by the BSP.

Singh claims that all roads in his constituency are cemented. He further said that Union health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad has laid down a foundation stone of a 200-bed hospital two months ago on the same ground, where Congress vice-president addressed a massive election rally.

‘Congress-led Sheila Dikshit government had laid down a foundation stone of the same hospital in 2008 before Delhi assembly elections. After five years, the same government has laid down the foundation stone for the same proposed hospital at the same place, but construction work has not started,’ said Manish Kumar, a small businessman in the area.
