The alleged suicide by Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula and many other similar incidents show that the Father of the Constitution, BR Ambedkar, is more relevant today than ever. This was the view expressed by many speakers at a seminar on Ambedkar and the Indian constitution on Thursday.
The seminar was organised in Viceregal Hall that houses the Delhi University’s Vice-Chancellor’s (VC) office. VC Yogesh Tyagi presided over the seminar.
“Ambedkar is even more relevant today because the blot of unaccountability is still there on the face of our country. The death of Rohith Vemula was a shameful incident. Ambedkar's philosophy is nothing but to end discrimination and to built a society on the basis of justice, equality and fraternity," said professor Anand Kumar.
Constitutional expert Subhash Kahayp said: "The Constitution is a living document and it was BR Ambedkar who planted life into it. The problem with our generation is that they interpret everything without reading the context."
Professor Rakesh Sinha expressed his reservation over the allegedly manufactured movement against caste discrimination in various universities. Sinha said: “There may be some problems in the society but these can be solved only through debates. BR Ambedkar is a leading light for all of us and we all share his legacy.” Lawyer Sanjay Hegde, Prof Anand Kumar, scholars, teachers and students were also present.
