Ambedkar medical college faces hurdles in appointments

Inaugurated on June 12, the medical college presently has the capacity and permission for intake of 100 medical students and there are plans of further expansion in the future.

The medical college will be starting its first session by mid September. As the authorities at the college start preparing for the session ahead, one of the challenges being faced is regularisation and retention of the existing contractual faculty members working in the college and also in attracting additional faculty for the next batches to come in.

Presently there are only four permanent faculty members who are working in the college which is inclusive of the Director cum Principal. All these faculty members have been transferred from Maulana Azad Medical College.

The three faculty members, apart from the Director cum Principal, are teaching in the departments of physiology, biochemistry and community medicine. Aiding them is a huge number of 63 contractual faculty members which includes about 41 professors, associate professors, assistant professors and 12 tutors.

Even as these contractual employees are termed as employees of Delhi government and have a minimum contract of two years, most of these contractual employees can lose out on salary terms once the 7th Central Pay Commission comes to force since they have been appointed on a fixed salary.

In mentioning the importance of quality faculty, Dr Achal Gulati, Director and Principal, mentions of the works being done by the college authorities and the Delhi government towards regularising the contractual employees at better terms and conditions.

Gulati said: “The Delhi government at present does not have a regular teaching cadre and so appointments on a regular basis become difficult.

It can, however, select general duty medical officers and non-teaching specialists as a cadre for them exists under the Delhi government. We are working towards establishing a procedure wherein, the Delhi government will be able to appoint its own teaching faculty.”
