All the right rules

We spoke to Sumit D Chowdhury, author of Rules of the Game about the book, careers and some more. Read on...

How did the idea of the book come to you?
The idea to write this book came from my interactions with thousands of young professionals who have worked with me in the past and trying to get into their shoes and see that the challenges they were facing. I realized that most of them start learning all over again and spend the next decade figuring out the rules of the game of corporate life. This book is an attempt to cut-short this learning time by making them aware of the different nuances of corporate workplace that speeds up or cuts-short the careers of people. Rules of the Game is my personal interpretation of life and of managing careers. It is certainly interspersed with my own career journey and thoughts, along with the wisdom of several top CEOs of the country and hundreds of opinions from people who have gone through the formative stages of building their careers successful or not so successfully.

Tell us about the best and the worst moments when it came to writing this book?
The best moment in the whole journey was getting my proposal accepted by all the four international publishers. I knew I was onto something and there was an in-principle acceptance of my ideas in the world. The second best moment was the actual launch of the book. I actually saw the first printed version directly on stage after the release in Delhi. The worst part was not being able to accommodate all the ideas and all the interviews that people gave. I was always thinking I was missing out something.

What plans next? Any other books in the pipeline?
I plan to spend the next 6 months (weekends) going to various schools and colleges and companies talking to young professionals. This tour – titled ‘Career Conversations’ is going to keep my busy. The follow-on book is a Workbook that will accompany this book so that others can spread the word easily without requiring my presence. Subsequent to that I have another book in the pipeline that is a guidebook for the leadership and CEO of any company to create self-sustaining organizations.
