Notwithstanding anti-graft crusader Anna Hazare’s criticism of the central government for its alleged betrayal on the Lokpal bill, the government told Hazare that it has taken all necessary steps to give effect to all three recommendations contained in the ‘Sense of the House’ as conveyed to him by the Prime Minister in his letter dated 27 August, 2011.
In a letter dated 10 January, PMO Minister of State V Narayanasamy has written to Hazare in response to the latter’s letter dated 17 November, 2012. Hazare had talked about the lack of action on the part of the government over issues relating to the Lokpal.
Narayanasamy wrote to Hazare that after discussion in both Houses of Parliament on 27 August, 2011, the House had agreed in principle on the Citizens Charter, lower bureaucracy to be brought under the Lokpal and establishment of Lokayuktas.
Narayanasamy wrote that the government introduced a new comprehensive Lokpal and Lokayuktas Bill, 2011 in the Lok Sabha to establish the Lokpal and Lokayukta, while covering the entire bureaucracy – Group A to D government employees. The government also introduced Constitution 116th Amendment bill, 2011 to confer constitutional status on these bodies.
A separate bill has been introduced in the Lok Sabha to provide relief to the common man from day-to-day hassles and delays in obtaining services.
