The Congress Party rally on FDI at Ramlila Maidan on Sunday, where a large number of supporters came to attend from the states of Delhi, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and adjoining places, caused heavy traffic hindrance all over the city. In many places, especially the roads leading to the Ramlila Maidan, traffic came to a standstill. ‘ More than 1,000 buses and 3,000 passenger vehicles came for the rally from Delhi and outside. Traffic congestion was on the route of the rally, and also in Central and New Delhi district areas from 8.00 am till evening even after the rally was over by afternoon ,’ said a police official.
‘The important roads like, Ring Road, ITO, Daryaganj, Tilak Marg, Connaught Place, Delhi Gate, JLN Marg faced heavy traffic snarls, since 8 am in the morning till the evening, after the rally,’ said a traffic police official. The commuters faced a tough time commuting on the roads, though it was a Sunday, people were out for shopping, as Diwali is coming up. It added to the woe of the people in the streets.
‘I was on my way to New Delhi Railway Station from Preet Vihar, and was stuck in ITO traffic for more than an hour, as a result I missed my train, which was scheduled in late afternoon,’ said a commuter.
Another commuter from North Delhi, Shilpi Garg, faced a similar situation, ‘I had to go to Paharganj, but instead of taking the ITO route. I took the route of I P Marg to reach my destination, which took me more than an hour.’
‘There were limited parking spaces for cars in the vicinity of Ramlila Maidan at Asaf Ali Road. I parked my car at Mata Sundari Marg to go the the Indian Medical Association, all the way walking,’ said Ramesh Jha.
Till late evening, the buses which carried the members of the rally were parked at the Power House road, Velodrome road, Rajghat parking, and Shanti Van parking, blocking the roads, making it difficult for other vehicles to commute in those areas.
