All his tunes

You have heard Mohammad Irfan croon his way into your heart with Banjaara from Ek Villain, Baarish from Yaariyan and Muskurane ki Wajah from Citylights. Now hear what he has to say as he gets candid with Millennium Post.

Tell us about yourself. How did you start off?
I started off in school. My music teacher K RamaChary identified the singing talent in me. Since then I’ve been into music. Apart from music, I’ve always been consistent in my studies and completed my Engineering in Electronics and Communication from Osmania University, Hyderabad, before shifting base to Mumbai.

What was the first big break for you?

Mithoon sir has given me my break in playback singing. I had sung 2 songs in his movie Lamhaa. But my debut was Behne de from the movie Raavan which I’d sung for AR Rahman sir.

How would you define your musical philosophy?  Tell us a bit about your music, what do you think defines you?
My philosophy of music is something which touches your soul. It is a medium of one’s expression and connects to a million hearts. It’s a beautiful way to connect to the Almighty.

How easy (or difficult) is it to make a mark in the music scene? What do you think about the main issues are?
It was not easy to make a mark here earlier, but these days we have a lot of new singers n musicians coming up, which is great. But the tough part is to sustain. For that you need to constantly strive.

What/Who inspires you?
My early inspiration has been Mohammed Rafi Sahab. My personal favorite singer is KK, whom I admire and follow.

Tell us about your best tracks...
Phir Mohabbat (Murder2) was the first big hit in my career, which gave me recognition. But this year has been amazing with songs like Baarish (Yaariyan), Dard Dilo Ke (The Xpose), Muskurane ki wajah (CityLights), Banjaara (Ek Villain) and two songs in Salman Khan starrer Kick.

What suggestions/advice would you have for newbies in music?
I’m not a very big singer yet, but the only advice I would give to upcoming singers is to have self-belief. Also to analyse your skills properly before making the big plunge, and not hurrying into anything.

What’s next in the pipeline?
Few very good songs are also coming up but I can’t talk about them right now.

Any actors you definitely want to sing for?
No wish-list of actors I want to sing for. I’d prefer to gradually sing for all of them.

Who do you consider competition in your field?
If you consider others as competition, they are but I don’t do so. I strongly believe whatever I deserve will come to me, my job is to keep working hard and remain focused.
