Akhilesh Yadav gifts students free laptops with Mulayam on desktop

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav fulfilled yet another poll promise on Monday when he launched free laptop distribution scheme for class XII pass students saying this computer will help them to explore new world.

The lucky recipients of the Hewlett-Packard laptops worth Rs. 19,000 each will boot up with photos of the chief minister and his father, Mulayam Singh, on the home page.

‘We had promised during election campaign that our government will provide free laptops to class XII students, and on Monday we are fulfilling that promise. This shows there is no difference in the words and actions of Samajwadi Party,’ the CM said, while launching the scheme at a function held at Colvin Taluqedar’s college here.

He even narrated an incident about people’s perception about locomotive when it was launched. Then also people had thought that the coal engine will not work and if works it will not stop. Similarly, our detractors had said that laptop distribution project will not take off.

‘Today is the day when we can say proudly that SP too talks about English and laptop and is working to bridge the digital divide,’ the chief ministre said.

In its election manifesto the Samajwadi Party had declared distribution of free laptops to class XII psss students and tablet computers to class X pass students. The chief minister distributed the first set of laptops to a limited number of class 12 pass outs at a just four days before the Samajwadi Party government completes its first year in office on 15 March.

Around 10,000 students were given laptops. The target is to give laptops to 15 lakh students.

‘Earlier, it was wheel that changed the lives of the people. Now, it is internet that has changed everything, whether it is government functioning or field of education. We want every child to say that they got equal opportunity during Samajwadi party regime therefore these laptops are given to them,’ he said.

Talking about development he said his government has stated projects that could bring the state to the path of development. The state has suffered during last BSP regime. ‘We are building roads, improving power supply and inviting investors so that our youth can get jobs in future. What we have achieved in one year is an indicator where the state will be in next five years,’ he said.

The laptops, manufacturered by HP have Urdu, Hindi and English language software, essential anti-virus, blue tooth and a webcam with 2-GB memory (expandable upto 4GB) and a 500 GB hard disc drive. Other features include sample papers of prominent engineering and medical entrance tests.
