Indefinite curfew has been clamped in the temple city of Faizabad after communal clashes were reported in which over two dozen shops were set on fire. Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav has asked officials to firmly deal with those creating problems in the state.
Principal Secretary (Home) RM Srivastava said curfew was clamped in the entire Kotwali police station area on Thursday morning after reports of violence started pouring in. All schools and colleges have been closed in the city and its adjoining areas for the next couple of days while most of the temples were closed, he said.
‘Faizabad has been sealed. No one is allowed entry in the city,’ Srivastava said.
Police say there were reports of stone pelting from the sensitive Chowk area on Thursday morning after a fire broke out at a Durga puja pandal. Later, two groups clashed and police had to resort to mild lathicharge to control the situation. Around 20 shops near a religious place and several vehicles were set on fire by miscreants in which over 24 people, including a police sub-inspector, were injured, police said.
