Despite the Yamuna Expressway being flaunted as the highway to state's development, the Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav has decided to skip its formal inauguration. The highway connects the National Capital Region to Agra and is scheduled to be thrown open to public at 11 am on Thursday.
Yadav will formally declare the highway open from Lucknow using a video-conferencing facility, which will be followed by flagging off vehicles by the senior party leader and member of Parliament Ram Gopal Yadav.
This not the first time that a state chief minister has decided to skip an inaugural ceremony scheduled in Noida. Several years ago, when the Delhi-Noida flyway was thrown open, the then Uttar Pradesh chief minister Rajnath Singh had chosen to inaugurate it from the Delhi end and not from Noida, which falls in Uttar Pradesh. It is said that Uttar Pradesh politicians, with the exception of the Bahujan Samaj Party supremo Mayawati, consider visit to Noida inauspicious and avoid holding public functions in the satellite city. However, it is another matter that in the next election the Singh government was voted out.
The Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav never visited Noida for a public function during his last tenure as chief minister. All the developmental works in the town were launched and inaugurated by his then confidant Amar Singh. Now his son Akhliesh has decided to follow his footsteps.
The state government officials responsible for the inauguration function were tight-lipped on the chief minister's decision to keep away from the inauguration site.
