Akhilesh cancels Harvard lecture after Azam’s frisking

In what app-ears to be a reaction to his minister Azam Khan’s detention at the Boston airport, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Friday decided to boycott the Harvard lecture he was invited to deliver. Earlier on Friday, the Samajwadi Party sought an apology from the US for the ‘insult’ caused by the questioning of UP minister Azam Khan at the Logan International Airport in Boston.

‘We demand an apology from the US on the issue as Indians cannot be insulted like this after being invited,’ senior SP leader Naresh Agarwal told reporters in New Delhi. The SP members in the Rajya Sabha also staged a protest over the issue leading to adjournment of the house on Friday. It was also learnt that Indian consulate in the US have sought a clarification from their American counterparts.

The Havard University website also quoted that, ‘Due to unforeseen circumstances, Harvard without Borders: Mapping the Kumbh Mela panel speaker will be UP Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani in place of UP CM Akhilesh Yadav and Mohammed Azam Khan, Minister of Urban Development, UP.

Meanwhile, officials of the Azam Khan’s office on Friday refuted that the minister was cutting short his visit to the US that started 24 April. The officials also contradicted some media reports that Azam Khan was taken into custody in Boston.
