Blaming previous BSP government for existing power woes in Uttar Pradesh, chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Sunday hinted at hiking power tariffs in the state in the coming future.
‘The power situation in the state has left a lot to be desired and some unpleasant decisions will have to be taken in order to bring it back to rails,’ he said while addressing a function organised here to launch ‘Vigyan Yatra’ and award distribution under Innovation in Science Pursuit for Inspired Research (INSPIRE) scheme.
The UP CM minced no words while attributing the poor power scenario in the state to the previous regime of Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party.
‘Had the previous government done good in the power sector, the situation would not have been so bad,’ he said and added that the state government has to spend Rs 7,000 crore annually in the power sector which was quite a hefty amount for any government.
‘We will have to take some harsh decisions to make up for the losses,’ he said, clearly hinting hike in the power tariffs.
The UP CM said power was an essential part in the development and despite advance researches in the field of science, the availability of electricity was still not adequate.
He also flagged off two buses as part of Vigyan Yatra, a project jointly undertaken by computer chip company ‘INTEL’ and the state secondary education department. This will cover 21 cities of the state to create awareness among the students and teachers about science and computer literacy.
A total of 2,100 teachers and 21,000 students will be benefited by this.
This was being considered as an important endeavour at this point of time as the UP government was prepared to distribute laptops and tablets among the students as per the announcement of the Samajwadi Party government.
Yadav also honoured five students from class VI to X for their breakthrough researches in various scientific fields under Government of India scheme of INSPIRE.
