Now with the BJP in the Centre seems to have encashed the issue by announcing regularisation of such colonies ahead of Assembly elections in Delhi.
He also said that power watchdog Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission (DERC) could not play role in auditing and tariff hike in last 12 years. “Delhi power consumers have to pay huge power bill.
While power theft was reduced from 54 per cent to 13 per cent and power discoms got a surplus revenue to the tune of Rs 4,000-5,000 crore annually, but the benefit did not reach the consumer,” he said.
During the 2003 and 2008, power tariffs were not hiked, that is why, Congress won both assembly polls.
Speaking to Millennium Post, Maken admitted that due to huge anti-incumbency against Delhi government and UPA in Centre, Congress faced humiliating defeat. He said that after almost one year of President’s rule and 7 months of Modi government, now Delhiites are preferring to return to Congress.
“The Delhi Cantonment Board results showed rebound of Congress in Delhi,” he added.
Maken also admitted that his previous government could not expedite the process of handing over certificate of regularisation. While Delhi government spent Rs 2800 crore in unauthorised colonies for sewer, roads, and basic amenities.
When asked about Congress’ position in upcoming polls, Maken said he was confident that the
Congress would win the February 7 Delhi election. One reason, he felt, was the crime graph. “Has not the crime rate gone up in Delhi? Have not rape incidents gone up?”
He also questioned the BJP over its failure to fulfill Lok Sabha election pledge to bring back money stashed abroad by rich Indians. “Have they fulfilled the promise of fetching back the black money? Most BJP promises had fallen flat,” he added.
