‘Air scare due to mental illness’

Mursalin Sheikh, 41, who had scared the passengers of IndiGo flight on Wednesday, was sent to Tihar jail for 24 hours by Metropolitan Magistrate Pankaj Sharma. The court will decide on the bail plea of Sheikh, whose counsel submitted that he was mentally unstable providing medical records, on Friday.

‘He has also directed the police to verify the address of a person who volunteered to stand as a surety to the accused if he gets bail,’  said a police official.

It was a harrowing time for passengers onboard the Mumbai-Delhi IndiGo flight when Sheikh created panic by shouting, talking threateningly, assaulting a cabin crew and trying to run into the cockpit.

Recollecting her horror, one of the passengers said that before the man acted violently, an air hostess had asked him to sit properly and requested him to take his seat several times but to no avail.

‘Suddenly, he became angry and his eyes were red. When the air hostess, who was serving at the time of incident, went back to the trolley, he went to her and slapped her hard. The man also tried to push her and run towards the cockpit in a fit of rage but the trolley blocked his way,’ she said.

The man was stopped by some fellow passengers onboard but he had a scuffle with them too, the woman, requesting anonymity, said.

Another passenger Palak Singh, who was onboard the flight, said, ‘All the while he was shouting to the air-hostess – ‘Do you want to go down with me?’ and trying to make call from his mobile, which created a scary moment as we thought that his mobile was some kind of detonator.’

Sheikh, boarded the flight from Mumbai. After about one hour, he got agitated and began to talk threateningly.

When he was restrained with the help of other passengers, he tried to bite his mobile which again sent everyone into panic, Singh said.
