Delhi police on Thursday arrested an Air India air hostess along with her sister from the Indira Gandhi International Airport for assaulting and locking their 13-year-old domestic help, who managed to rescue herself on Monday. The accused have been sent to 14-day judicial custody by a Delhi court.
The incident came to light when the minor maid rescued herself from the air hostesses’ residence at C-Block in Sarojini Nagar area of south Delhi and informed neighbours. She told her neighbour that her employer, identified as Bira Thoiba, an air hostess, had locked her from outside and kept her without food. Thoiba allegedly used to beat the girl with belts and had not paid any salary since the past two years, she alleged.
When the Delhi police was informed about the crime, a look-out notice was issued against Thoiba who had gone to Australia few days ago after locking her maid. The maid told the police that two years ago Thoiba’s sister, identified as Stoile Naubi, had brought her to Delhi on the pretext of providing her a job and educating her. On Thursday morning, when the accused arrived at IGI airport, they were arrested and produced before a Delhi court. After an in-camera proceeding before metropolitan magistrate Ashok Kumar, they were sent to judicial custody till 13 November.
The duo have been booked under various sections of the IPC including those related to causing hurt, wrongful confinement, slavery, provisions of Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, Bonded Labour Act and Child Labour Act.
