AIIMS scraps VIP parking, to be converted into park

Scraping VIP parking in their vicinity, All India Institute Medical Science (AIIMS) administration has decided to build a park in place of the existing parking lot.

Sources from AIIMS, requesting anonymity, said: ‘Few days back, the AIIMS administration decided to construct a new park and remove the existing VIP parking facility, opposite to the Dr RP Centre of Ophthalmic Science.’

‘Earlier government officials and bureaucrats used to park their cars with red beacons because of which thousands of patients across the city faced trouble. But now the park, built on an area of more than 1,000 square yards, will provide open spaces, where patients can walk around.

AIIMS engineering department initiated this move last week, and blueprints to construct the park on are ready. In the coming six to nine months, the park will be ready. In a resolution, the administration has also decided to constructing water fountains to improve the aesthetics of the area,’ the source said.

According to official records the space was originally supposed to be a park. However, in 2013 VIP officials were allotted the space for parking their vehicles. The rate set for parking in this vicinity was Rs 100 per hour. More than 200 VIP vehicles were parked in this place at any given point in time.

AIIMS has thousands of visitors everyday which include a large number of staff members and doctors. Last year, AIIMS had inaugurated multi-level underground parking where, according to a traffic survey, it was recorded that this particular space could accommodate more than 400 cars.

However, according to a recent traffic survey, approximately 14,000 vehicle, including 5,000 cars enter and leave AIIMS premises every day.
