AIIMS nurse roughed up by relatives of patient admitted in ICU

According to police, at the time of the incident the nurse, who hails from Arunachal Pradesh, was on her night duty. She was instructed to take care of the patients admitted in the Intensive Care Unit. At around 12.30 am, one of the patient rang a bell to call the nurse. When she reached near his bed one of his relative asked her to change the drip.

The nurse then found that the patient was accompanied by three care takers, as against one allowed. She then instructed them to leave the ICU but the relatives reluctantly denied.

‘The argument turned violent and they started beating her up. She was roughed up by two women relatives of the patient, a police official said quoting the victim’s allegation. Other nurses had to intervene to control the scuffle, he added.

The nurse soon after informing the hospital authorities, made a call to the police control room. ‘We received a PCR call at around 12.36 am after which a team was sent to the spot,’ the official added.

He further said, ‘victim’s statement was recorded in the hospital premises and she was admitted in the same hospital. She is currently undergoing treatment for her injuries. A medical examination was also conducted that confirmed the attack.’

A case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Hauz Khas police station and the probe is on. ‘We have questioned both the accused who are likely to be arrested soon,’ the official said.
