AIIMS gets three-level underground parking

In what could be a major relief from parking woes at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the three-level underground parking in the hospital premises is ready for inauguration. The parking foundation stone was laid by the Union Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad a year ago.

Professor YK Gupta, AIIMS spokesperson, told Millennium Post the multi-level parking system was ready and will come into use within a few days. ‘I can’t give a date but it will start soon,’ he said.

AIIMS officials said the multi-level parking has the capacity to accommodate around 450 cars. Currently, the institute charges parking fee of Rs 100 per car for up to four hours for parking inside AIIMS premises.

When asked about the high tariff, Gupta said, ‘We keep the charges high to discourage visitors to park their vehicles inside unnecessarily as there is no space inside the hospital. We are hoping that with this multi-level parking things will improve.’

A visitor, Ashish, a resident of west Delhi, said, ‘Now, with this multi-level parking facility we will be relieved of the problem and there would be less congestion in the hospital premises. We won’t have to strive long for the parking space. We don’t know the charges but it will save both time and energy’.

According to hospital authorities, apart from this parking project costing approximately Rs 50 crore, another proposal to build a brand new private ward with a separate underground parking facility was approved by the ministry.
