AIADMK calls for 12-hour bandh for Jayalalithaa

A Ravindran, Uppalam town secretary of AIADMK told reporters here that the bandh would commence from 6 am on Saturday in protest against the ‘false case’ imposed on Jayalalithaa and her ‘wrongful imprisonment’.

Four of the five AIADMK legislators, barring legislature party leader P Puroshothaman were present at the press meet. Asked about the absence of Puroshothaman, Ravindran said he was away in Karaikal, participating in a fast by party workers in protest against the conviction of their leader.

On 27 September, a special court in Bangalore had sentenced chief minister Jayalalithaa to four years in prision and slapped a Rs 100 crore fine on her in the Rs 66.65 crore disproportionate assets case.

Meanwhile, DMK on Friday urged governor K Rosaiah to ‘implement’ rule of law in Tamil Nadu and alleged breakdown of law and order and assault on judiciary by ruling AIADMK after jailing of party chief Jayalalithaa.

‘We request you to exercise your constitutional authority by taking appropriate action to implement the rule of law in Tamil Nadu,’ DMK organisation secretary RS Bharathi said in a memorandum to the governor.

The DMK urged him to direct the government to ‘act in accordance with law’ and take action against ruling partymen, who had ‘violated the law.’

After Jaya’s jailing, ministers and AIADMK office-bearers engaged in various ‘unlawful’ agitations, the DMK alleged and referred to burning of buses and claimed that their party offices were attacked.
