A week after their humiliating defeat in the assembly polls, Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee president JP Aggarwal resigned from his post on Sunday. Agarwal has sent his resignation letter to party president Sonia Gandhi.
‘A day after the poll debacle, former chief minister Sheila Dikshit had rapped Agarwal for failing to “enthusiastically back” her during the campaign,’ a party source said.
The newly-elected Congress legislators had complained to party vice- president Rahul Gandhi and directly accused Aggarwal of ‘non-cooperation’ in the election process.
From winning 43 seats in the 70-member assembly in the 2008 elections, the Congress this year could win a mere eight seats. After its crushing defeat, the party is attempting to seriously reflect on what went wrong.
Aggarwal was reported to have had a bad rapport with Dikshit, but the differences between the two were kept under wraps during the poll season. Rahul had tried to mend the fences between the two before elections were announced.
