After doctors & attendants clash, resident doctors go on strike

The patients on Monday suffered major inconveniences as many of them were denied essential treatment services at Deen Dayal Upadhayay hospital due to the strike of resident doctors owing to a physical attack on a resident doctor by a group on Sunday night.

At one point of time, even the emergency services were suspended due to non availability of doctors. However, it was resumed in the afternoon though with a much reduced strength of doctors. To calm the tempers and to assess the situation, AAP MLA from Hari Nagar Jagdeep Sigh was also present at the hospital.

When asked whether the situation at the hospital could be improved, Singh said: “I am looking into the situation and am also in talks with the hospital authorities to improve the situation soon.” 

As the resident doctors were on strike, senior doctors and the Heads of the Departments were seen attending to patients. There were however, no referral allowed in the hospital, according to instructions from the  Medical Superintendent. 

According to one senior HOD, there are at present 80 senior resident doctors, 200 junior residents and 100 more doctors who are on strike.   

Responding to Millennium Post, Medical Superintendent Savita Babbar regretted of the inconvenience caused due to the patients and said that owing to the present situation, leaves of some senior doctors have been cancelled. 

Babbar also added that in the emergency ward at present there are three doctors attending to patients compared to a strength of 10. With regards to the Sunday incident where a resident doctor is believed to be injured, Babbar mentioned of a formation of a committee to look into the incident. 

Despite efforts to control the crowd, angry and chaotic scenes were witnessed with several patients complaining of the security staff’s rude behavior who are randomly turning down patients.
