African women and their who, where, why

On this Woman's Day artist Premila Singh is presenting vivid and colourful aspects of life organized around the theme of being woman. Beautiful yet thought provoking body of work titled ‘Who am I?’ reflects various emotions and moods of women. An immensely talented artist, Singh's artwork highlights not only the interiority and depth of being a woman, the myriad forms of her existences but also her topicality, her material and bodily presence and the issues around them.

An Indian origin painter Premila Singh, is a self-taught artist and has spent the last two decades in various African countries. In her work she highlights the beautiful and different landscapes of African as well the various ascepts of African women. Primarily based in South Africa, Singh has extensively traveled. Influenced by African colours and imagery she exhibits Africa through very bright and vibrant colours. The beautiful showcase is being curated by Ameeshi Tapuriah. The exhibition is taking place at Lokayata Art Gallery, Mulk Raj Center for Arts, Hauz Khas Village, from 8 to 11.

Enchanted with the beauty and culture of Africa Singh has been an ardent and keen observer of her subjects, be it the continent itself and the often extreme responses it evokes or people inhabiting it. African landscape comes alive in her paintings through yellows, blues, reds and whites used vicariously and abandonment that only the wild in us may relate to. On the other hand, focusing on the life of African women she articulates a very complex understanding of their life-style and issues around their social representation. In her paintings, around the current theme of women she symbolises African women as the delegate of women empowerment. A big continent like Africa represents women very diversely as it is in India. Talking about arts in India, she expresses her dissatisfaction on the tendency of people on arts, ‘People should buy art pieces for their love for arts not just as showcase.’
