Afghan national arrested at IGI with stolen Italian passport

An Afghan national was arrested from IGI Airport on Tuesday for carrying a stolen passport of an Italian citizen. He was planning to travel to Chicago with that passport, provided to him by a Delhi based Afghan travel agent. The accused was offloaded by Air India security staff after they received a message from Custom and Border Protection (CBP), USA, that the Italian passport which the Afghan national was carrying had been reportedly stolen.

According to the police on Tuesday, at around 5.30 am, an Air India security officer handed over a complaint along with the accused, identified as Rochelli Nicola Dante (the Afghan national), who was planning to travel to Chicago by flight No AI 127. He was offloaded as AI officials had already received the message from CBP, USA, that the Italian passport was a stolen one which was being used by the Afghan national.

On further interrogation, the accused revealed that his actual name is Abdul Hassib and he is an Afghan national who had come to India on Afghani passport with Indian tourist visa by Safi Airline (flight No. 4Q-247) on 29 August from Kabul to Delhi. He said that the Italian passport had been given to him by an Afghan national, Haji Bakhtawer Shah, who is a resident of Bhogal. Before giving the above complaint, the Air India had already got a confirmation from CBP regarding the stolen Italian passport.

‘We are investigating the matter and a case has been registered under section of 419/420/468/471 IPC and 14 Foreign Act,’ said a senior police official.
