Advocates get sensitivity lesson at Tihar

A three-day workshop was held at Tihar jail for advocates to sensitise them about providing effective legal aid to inmates, a prison official said on Monday.

Organised by Tihar Prisons in collaboration with Delhi Legal Services Authority, the workshop concluded after deliberating on issues such as client lawyer interaction, trial strategies and identifying and understanding the problem of prolonged pre-trial detention.

The other issues the workshop focused on were bail provision, especially statutory bail, admissibility of evidence, especially during trials, investigations and confession admissibility, examination of prosecution and defence witnesses and closing arguments of the defence.

Justice Gita Mittal of the Delhi High court and Justice R C Chopra [retired] and DG Tihar Prisons, Neeraj Kumar addressed the workshop which was attended by more than 100 lawyers.

‘Ninety per cent of the prisoners are poor. Lawyers are searched at the gates and they should not have any objection to it. All is done keeping in mind the welfare of the prison and its inmates,’ Kumar said.

He also apprised the gathering about welfare programmes started for the inmates including the campus placement drive that has resulted in recruitment of 357 of them in different organisations.

Justice Mittal said, ‘Lawyers consultation room should be organised inside lock-up or jail premises so that while talking to clients there is no trouble.’
