Additional 7 days for suggestions to us: DERC

A day after public hearing by Delhi Electricity Regulatory Commission [DERC] was marred by strong protests, DERC on Tuesday decided to give additional seven days to the consumers to give their suggestions on power tariff.

Earlier, DERC officials said they may hold another round of public hearing on the issue. However, officials said that because of Monday’s incident and security concerns, the commission decided to cancel the public hearing and is asking for suggestions via letters only.

Confirming the news, DERC Chairman P D Sudhakar said, ‘As the public hearing was marred by disruptions and many residents were not able to speak out, we are giving another chance to them for to express their suggestions to us in writing. The extension of seven days was not planned but we can’t miss suggestions and comments of the stakeholders and consumers on the proposal of the proposed tariff structure’.

DERC officials said that consumers can give in writing to them the proposed tariff slabs for domestic consumers.

The commission has already received various petitions and representations from stakeholders complaining against an alleged inordinate rise in electricity bills and seeking revision of structure of tariff slabs for energy charges in respect of domestic consumers.

Following widespread complaints of inflated power bills, DERC last month had proposed to revert to the original slabs for calculating power tariffs which was abolished while effecting a 34 per cent hike in tariff for domestic consumers in June.

A domestic consumer is now charged Rs 3.70 per unit if his consumption does not exceed 200 units but if the consumption goes above 200 units then Rs 4.80 per unit is charged as per the new slab of 0-400 units.

If the new proposal goes through, then consumers will be charged Rs 3.70 for first 200 units and then Rs 5.70 for power consumption between 201 to 400 units.

The abolition of the 201-400 units slab and introduction of 0-400 units slab had resulted in significant increase in electricity bills of majority of consumers whose consumption does not exceed 400 units.
