Activists plan to move SC against Noida Sports City

Days after National Green Tribunal (NGT) refused to intervene in the matter citing its limited jurisdiction, the environmental activists are now planning to move Supreme Court for scrapping of upcoming housing project ‘Sports City’ in sector 150 of Noida.

According to the activists, the project is being constructed on a land marked as green or recreational area in the Noida Master Plan 2031 and the authority changed the land use without the approval of the NCR Planning Board (NCRPB).

Gaurav Bansal, counsel for activists in the case said ‘the recreational green area of sector 150 was supposed to be developed into a world class sports facility by the authority. By pushing in a group housing project in it, the authority has violated its own rules. Legally, in Noida Master Plan 2031, there is no scope for a group housing project as the Sports City is only supposed to be used for sports related purposes.’

Approximately 12 lakh square meter of land has been leased out for a group housing project to develop the Sports City.

According to the petitioner, ‘as per NCRPB Act 1985, no authority has the power to change the land use without prior approval.’

The petitioner had moved NGT last month following which the central government was directed to file its response on the petition.
