Action against 700 DTC drivers, conductors

The officers and traffic supervisory staff, who have been deputed across the city on as many as 176 points, till date have checked 1,5106 buses during the ongoing safety and security drive by  Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC).

The corporation, which launched the special drive on 20 July, went on all days except Sundays and gazetted holidays, to ensure punctual operation of DTC buses. Safe driving, proper halting of the bus, courteous behaviour of crew, cases of irregularities on part of the crew, over speeding, rash and negligent driving, non stoppage of buses on bus stops, breaking of traffic norms and over taking on busy roads, were some of the issues that were tackled.

Driving low-floor buses with open gates, improper parking on roads and usage of mobile phones and music players while driving were also checked. On the receipt of reports from the checking officials, disciplinary action was initiated against 476 drivers and 288 conductors.  There are around 10,000 drivers and conductors handling 5,770 buses, in Delhi. It was noticed during  the drive that more than 7,000 buses parked in an improper manner and the crew was without proper uniform, behaved rudely and did not  issue tickets. Other discrepancies such as presentability and cleanliness of the buses, missing and torn seats, non-functioning ACs and mssing window panes were also noticed.

The display of destination boards was also marked by the corporation. Conditions of bus queue shelters and their illumination, dirty bus terminals, time keepers not found at duty place, beat checking staff not performing their duty properly and so on were some of the most common complaints.
