ABVP sweeps DUSU polls, wins three posts

A day after the BJP anointed Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as its prime ministerial candidate, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) swept the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) polls that were held on Friday, winning three posts out of four. The Congress-backed National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) won one post this year.

DS Rawat, chief returning officer of DUSU, said while declaring results: ‘ABVP has won the seats of president, vice-president and joint secretary and NSUI has bagged the general secretary’s seat. Out of 1,27,000 voters, 51,000 came out to vote.’ ABVP’s Aman Awana was elected president with 17,879 votes, defeating NSUI’s Vishal Chaudhary who got 16,346 votes. Utkarsh Chaudhary became the vice-president by getting 14,968 votes defeating NSUI’s Kapil Sharma by 3,691 votes.
Raju Rawat, became joint secretary with 15,643 votes, leaving behind NSUI’s Kushan Khari by 3,288 votes.

Rohit Chahal, ABVP’s state secretary, said: ‘This time, NSUI got lukewarm response from students. It was ABVP all the way.’ NSUI’s Karishma Thakur was elected general secretary with 14,662 votes after defeating her ABVP rival Anshu Lakra by 2,718 votes.
