The BJP-backed students’ body Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) protested outside the Delhi University Vice-Chancellor (VC) Dinesh Singh’s house on Thursday by beating drums and utensils, demanding complete roll back of four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP). ‘He has spoiled the lives of thousands of students by implementing FYUP. How can he sleep peacefully? We will not let him sleep unless the reputation of this prestigious university is restored’, said one of the protestors outside VC’s house.
Interestingly, the leaders of ABVP have also planned to perform a ‘hawan’ at the campus for the betterment of the university. ‘Since the VC and the university administration is not doing anything for the university, God is our only hope. We will also pray that better sense must prevail in VC so that he can take some decisions for the benefit of university’, said Rohit Chahal, national secretary of ABVP.
The protest outside the VC’s house comes just a day after Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) met Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani. The minister made it clear that DU is an autonomous body and any decision to roll back FYUP rests with the university. The ABVP has also threatened with a bigger protest on Saturday.
The BJP, who also promised to roll back FYUP in its manifesto, was optimitic that it will be finally happen ever since it has gained power at the Center. The BJP-backed student and teachers’ body has also already submitted a memorandum to Smriti Irani against FYUP stating that 91 per cent of the students are against it. However, in the last few days first year students of the university have voiced their opinion in favour of FYUP, putting the claims of ABVP at risk.
The students have already submitted a memorandum to the VC in favour of FYUP and have asked for an appointment with the HRD minister.
