Abhishek Verma, wife remanded to CBI custody

Businessman Abhishek Verma and his Romanian wife were on Thursday remanded in CBI custody till 21 August by a Delhi court in connection with a forgery case lodged against them on the complaint of Union Sports Minister Ajay Maken.

The court sent both to the CBI’s custody after the agency said they were required for their custodial interrogation for probe into the forgery case.

“Both the accused are remanded to CBI custody till August 21,” Special CBI Judge Sanjeev Jain said.

Verma and his wife Anca Maria Neascu were produced before the court after expiry of their judicial custody and the CBI told the court that they need their custody to interrogate them in connection with the forgery case.

Both the accused had been granted bail on August 8 in a corruption case for allegedly receiving money from a Swiss firm to stall its blacklisting proceedings by the Indian government. They were granted bail after the CBI failed to file the charge sheet within stipulated 60 days’ period after their arrest on June 8 in the corruption case.

The CBI, however, had arrested them on the same day in the fresh forgery case, registered on Maken’s complaint, in the courtroom itself after which both the accused were remanded to judicial custody.

They were granted bail in the case involving the alleged receipt of USD 530,000 from Rheinmetall Air Defence AG (RAD) for using his influence to stall its blacklisting proceedings.

During the day’s proceedings, Verma and Anca moved another court to surrender in a money laundering case registered against them by the Enforcement Directorate (ED).

Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) Gautam Manan, however, put their application for hearing on August 21 keeping in view that they are already in CBI’s custody till then.

The couple filed an application before the ACMM saying they are willing to surrender in the ED’s case.

“The above mentioned applicants (Verma and Anca) want to surrender themselves to the court of ACMM, New Delhi in the above mentioned FIR (of the ED). The applicants may be allowed to surrender themselves,” the application said.

The counsel appearing for Vermas told the court that the ED earlier had moved the court for court’s permission to arrest both the accused in the money laundering case and both of them are now willing to surrender. During the brief arguments on their plea, ED prosecutor Naveen Kumar Matta said he needs some time to respond to the application. The ED prosecutor also said both the accused are presently in the CBI’s custody and if they are allowed to surrender, it would hamper the investigation.

CBI prosecutor V K Sharma, who was also present in the court along with both the accused, also said their plea should be considered later on because they are in the agency’s custody.

The ACMM listed the application for further hearing on August 21 and directed the ED’s investigating officer to be present in the court on the next date of hearing.

Verma had earlier told the court that he has been falsely implicated by the agency in the forgery case at the behest of Congress leader Jagdish Tytler against whom he had deposed in a corruption case.

The CBI had registered a forgery case against Verma and his wife for allegedly writing a letter to the Prime Minister in 2009 on Maken’s forged letterhead for easing of business visa norms.

Verma is also an accused in the Naval War Room leak case in which Navy’s commercial secrets were leaked to the foreign firms.
