Notably, the AAP had fielded only six women candidates and they have all won their respective seats beating the citadel of old warhorses. Since the issue of women’s security was one of the prime agenda of the newbie party during the ballot battle, election of six women MLAs may pave the way for new policy structuring in the next five years’ tenure of Kejriwal government.
The women contestants, who secured their win include Alka Lamba, Rakhi Birla, Bhavna Gaur, Parmila Tokas, Sarita Singh and Vandana Kumari. This is the second largest representation of women in the Assembly following the maximum of 10 women MLAs in the second term of the Delhi Assembly in 1998.
“We hope the promises made by Kejriwal to provide round-the-clock security to Delhi women would be fulfilled and girls of the capital city will tread fearlessly. The AAP has promised to install CCTV cameras across the city, which will be a very major move aimed at women’s security,” expressed Sneha Kumari, who voted for AAP.
Though, all the AAP women MLAs have won with huge margins, Bhavna Gaur stands at the top, winning the Palam seat by defeating BJP’s Dhram Dev Solanki with a margin of 30,849 votes. While Rakhi Birla has again defeated Congress veteran Raj Kumar Chauhan by a margin of 22,699 votes and won Mangolpuri seat for her party. AAP’s Parmila Tokas defeated Anil Sharma by 19,068 votes and registered a win from RK Puram seat. The winning margins of other women candidates are as such: Alka Lamba won from Chandni Chowk by 18,287 votes, Vandana Kumari wrested Shalimar Bagh assembly seat by a margin of 10,978 votes and Sarita Singh won Rohtas Nagar seat for her party by a margin of 7,874 votes.
