AAP won’t contest Haryana assembly polls

The Aam Aadmi Party’s (AAP) Haryana unit on Tuesday decided not to contest the upcoming assembly election in the state. Senior party leader Yogendra Yadav told Millennium Post over the phone that AAP Haryana unit sent its recommendation to the national executive committee which will take a final call in this regard. AAP has shown its disinclination to fight the upcoming Haryana Assembly polls as it plans to focus its energy on the Delhi Assembly polls.

‘We have conducted a survey in our state unit in which around 95 per cent of our volunteers were in favour to contest the election in Haryana, but the national leadership was not so keen on this regard so our state unit decided not to contest in the coming election,’ said Yadav. The decision not to contest the state polls was taken at a meeting of the state executive of AAP headed by senior leader Yogendra Yadav at Karnal on Tuesday.

According to party sources, the shortage of party volunteers and resources has forced AAP to decide against contesting in Haryana and Maharashtra. Earlier, the party had said if the election dates in these states clashed with the Delhi election date the party would think about contesting elections at these states.

Some of its leaders feel the party needs to channelise its energy and scarce resources in home ground Delhi where it made an impressive debut last December during the assembly election but subsequently failed to win any of the seven Lok Sabha seats.
