The newly-formed Aam Aadmi Party government has said that it would ensure that unskilled labourers are paid the minmum wage of Rs 8,086 per month. In a statement, Delhi labour minister Girish Soni said that the government was committed to implement the minimum wages notification issued on 30 October, 2013.
The minister expressed deep concern over complaints from workers about non-payment of the notified minimum rates of wages. He noted that the workers employed through contractors are not being paid minimum wages even though the contractors get full wages from the principal employers. The government is committed to ensure the welfare of contract labourers, said the minister in the statement.
According to the notification, the present rates of minimum wages are Rs 8,086 per month or Rs 311 per day for unskilled workers, Rs 8,918 per month or Rs 343 per day for semi-skilled workers and Rs 9,802 per month or Rs 377 per day for skilled workers.
The minister directed all the employers to make payments of wages to their employees through cheques or credit the wages in the employees’ account through ECS (Electronic Clearing System) after obtaining authorisation from the employees as per Section 6 of the Payment of Wage Act 1936 for this purpose.
The minister further said in the statement that compliance of this order will not only ensure payment of minimum wages.
But will also redress the legitimate grievances of the employees and will lead to better industrial relation between the employers and employees.
