On the other hand, four Ugandan nationals registered a police case against ‘unknown persons’ on Friday for misbehaving with them during the raid by Delhi minister Somnath Bharti and his party cadres.
‘These officers were involved in dereliction of duty and have compromised their positions. If these four officers are not suspended by Monday morning, I will be forced to sit on dharna along with my cabinet colleagues and MLAs on Monday from 11 am outside the North Block,’ said Kejriwal. In the meeting with union home minister Sushil Kumar Shinde on Friday evening, Kejriwal demanded immediate suspension of four police officers who did not follow the instructions of his ministers.
The officers targeted by Kejriwal include assistant commissioner of police Harpal Singh, who had arguments with law minister Somnath Bharti on Wednesday night and station house officer of the area Vijay Pal. In another case on the same night, the chief minister has demanded suspension of station house officer of Sagarpur and ACP of the same area for not following directions of women and child development minister Rakhi Birla.
Earlier, in the day a meeting was called by the Lieutenant Governor on the issue, which was attended by Kejriwal, his ministers Manish Sisodia, Rakhi Birla and Somnath Bharti, Delhi police commissioner B S Bassi and special police commissioner (law and order) Deepak Mishra. ‘I will not suspend my officers since as per my knowledge they acted in accordance with law,’ Bassi told the media after the meeting where a decision was taken to institute a judicial enquiry into the matter.
Support for Delhi Police from BJP leader Arun Jaitley, who said in a tweet that the only redeeming part in Wednesday night’s episode was the Delhi police officials refusing to obey the bidding of Bharti to conduct a midnight raid on a house in Khirkee Extension where the minister alleged a drug and prostitution racket was being run.
‘Delhi Police ACP has stood by law and not meekly followed diktats of his minister - the only redeeming feature in this unseemly episode,’ Jaitley posted. ‘The action by AAP cadres to carry out medical tests which included cavity search on some women foreign nationals is contrary to law,’ the BJP leader wrote.
The entire area from India Gate to President House including North Block, the venue of dharna, will soon be put into restricted entry area due to ongoing preparations of Republic Day celebrations. Reacting on the development, former IPS officer Kiran Bedi termed it anarchy and said, ‘The minister must not have raided the sex racket himself but should bring the matter in the notice of Delhi Police Commissioner or the Lieutenant Governor.’
Manish Sisodia said, ‘It’s not Sheila Dikshit’s government. We will fix the Delhi police. We will act even if Delhi police refuses to take action.’ Sisodia added he respects the order of LG for a judicial inquiry into the matter but till then the officers must be suspended.
