Pumped up with its historic victory in the Delhi assembly elections, the Aam Aadmi Party is now aiming for Haryana. With the slogan: Dilli to hamari hai, ab Haryana ki baari hai (Delhi has been won, it’s now time to win Haryana), the party is aiming to shake up the political scene in Haryana too.
AAP ( Haryana) convener Ashawant Gupta told Millennium Post that there are around 20,000 people who have joined the party in the state and they are going to start public meeting from Friday from Sirsa district.
‘We are going to have public meetings in three districts on daily basis. On Friday, there will be a meeting in Sirsa and on Saturday a meeting will be organised in Rohtak while on Sunday there will be three meetings in Sonipat, Yamuna Nagar and Ambala district where we will interact with the people and discus ways to change the corrupt system,’ Gupta said.
Earlier, on 15 December, the AAP registered over 1,500 members in its first ever meeting outside Delhi.
AAP is eyeing Haryana for two reasons. Firstly, Haryana shares borders with the national capital and its spectacular performance in Delhi is likely to give it some footing there as well. AAP has a support base in Haryana and many volunteers in the run up to the Delhi polls came from Haryana. Secondly, Kejriwal has family links with Haryana’s Bhiwani district where his relatives are settled.
Congress faces a stiff challenge in next year’s Lok Sabha and assembly elections (likely in October) from the main opposition Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and the HJC-BJP combine. In the Hisar by-poll, the AAP leaders had for the first time, campaigned actively against the Congress.
Around 7,000 people from Haryana, Gurgaon in particular, are likely to attend the swearing in ceremony of chief minister-designate Arvind Kejriwal on 28 December.
