AAP seeks full statehood, intends to include commoners’ views in Budget

On the last day of the Delhi Assembly session on Tuesday, the AAP government demanded full statehood for the sake of development in the national Capital and decided to involve commoners in the making of Delhi’s Budget for 2015-16.

Speaking at the Delhi Assembly, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said: “Full statehood would make the Delhi Police accountable to the Assembly and we will be in a better position to deal with law and order.” Not just Kejriwal, but his ministers too seconded the issue of full statehood.

He stated that the promises he has made about reducing the electricity tariff and providing 700 litres of free water will be implemented very soon.

Kejriwal also asked his legislators and the BJP MLAs to take note of problems related to water shortage in their constituencies so that the government can prepare a concrete plan to deal with the situation.

He has announced to introduce a White Paper on the power sector by the Delhi government to make people aware of the current situation. “Through the White Paper, the government wants to inform people on the sector’s current position and from where the work needs to be started. People can compare the progress made by the AAP government looking at the White Paper at the end of five years,” he stressed.

Speaking on the Delhi Budget, he said that his government will seek and involve common people in preparing the Budget. “We have decided to ask people how their Budget should be instead of allocating money to various departments. We will choose five to 10 Assembly constituencies for the initiative. Their feedback will then be discussed in the House,” he said.

In the meantime, the Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung in his address in the first session of the Sixth Legislative Assembly of Delhi also pushed for “full statehood”.
