AAP pushes Cong behind, gains 3 per cent vote share

Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) increased its vote share by three per cent in Delhi and continued to be the second strongest political force in the city. The newbie party fought with the BJP neck-and-neck in all the seven seats, pushing the Congress to third position.

AAP’s voting percentage increased from the last assembly election held in December 2013 from 30 percent to 33 per cent.

The party further said that the Congress, who won all the seven seats in 2009 general elections in Delhi, has been completely wiped out. ‘Our vote percentage has been increased but BJP gained from the shift which happened in case of Congress bringing down their vote share from 26 to 15 per cent, amounting to a solid decrease of 11 per cent, said AAP’s spokesperson and Chandni Chowk candidate Ashutosh.

‘The BJP received a huge number of vote shares from the Congress and increased its vote sharing from 33 per cent to 46, he added.

‘We made some mistakes and could not convince the people as to why we exactly resigned in Delhi. We need to work on that and this is not the end for us for sure. The election was a learning experience for us. But the people have supported us,’ said Rajmohan Gandhi, AAP’s east Delhi candidate.

There was a sense of despondence at the AAP office. The party, which was in power in Delhi, though briefly, had expected better results in the Capital. It won 28 seats in the state assembly election and governed for 49 days. Meanwhile, Ashutosh congratulated the BJP on their fantastic victory.
